I love getting a prezzie, don’t you. There is just something so exciting about a friend saying “I found just the thing for you the other day, I know you’ll love it” and then handing you something fab.
The other day my lovely friend Sue said just that and gave me this fabulous old book called “The Book Of Hints And Wrinkles”. From the title I did wonder if this were something to help with my aging facial expression, but no, it’s an old (pre 1950s) book on running a home.
I am such a sucker for old books, and this one is a real gem. The accounts section alone leaves you gasping at the budget. Personal and clothing allowance 2pennies (old money in UK ladies not decimal coinage) for hair pins. Ahah, but development 6pennies on a magazine, now that’s better!
Here is the laundry chapter. Just feast your eyes on that washer. We are just so spoiled nowadays with our washer/dryers, our steam irons, and every gadget known to man.
But I am not mocking, far from it. This old book is jam packed with wonderful hints and tips, it’s right up my street. There is everything from bringing up a baby (thank God I don’t need that anymore, mine tends to look after me), how to administer dry powders to a dog (with full illustration of course), to how to remove every type of stain without the use of something that comes in a bright pink bottle with the word Vanish on it.
It got me thinking, oh dear, always a bad sign. That I really want to do so much more on my Home Hints. Not just the planned book (and thanks for the name input ladies), but also on this blog. I’m trying to work out ways to make my hints and tips fun and bring a good layout. So watch this space.
Maybe I won’t be able to help you raise that baby, but I shall do my best with other household hints.

I love old books and that one looks like a good one. I remember when I was very young my mom using a washing machine with the wringer on top only her machine was round.
